National Broadcasters
Training Network is seeking mentor candidates throughout North America.
If you're currently employed in broadcasting and have an interest in
earning additional income by mentoring a broadcast student in your
area, please call us toll-free at 1-888-76RADIO (1-888-767-2346) local (425)-673-4505, or conveniently register online. We will contact you to discuss the compensation, procedures and rewards involved in becoming an NBTN mentor.
An Investment In Radio's Future
National Broadcasters Training Network is your organization. Virtually every mentor involved with NBTN is a current, working broadcaster employed by organizations like Clear Channel, Infinity, or Entercom, as well as many other broadcast groups and independent stations throughout North America. It's an opportunity to earn some freelance income by mentoring - by giving something back to radio.
Again, as a working professional broadcaster, this is your organization. NBTN was created to provide a qualified broadcaster with very limited time, with an organized way to do a credible job of helping a local broadcast student get a start in the business. Our job is to do all of the recruiting, screening, online curriculum management, interview arranging, etc. so that all you have to do is mentor your student. NBTN maintains all the administrative responsibility for the student throughout the process. Your station has no responsibilities or liabilities of any kind.
How Does It Work?
Our student works on writing, producing, and announcing assignments from the online curriculum on their own time using a desktop recording & editing package provided to them at enrollment. Then, they bring in or email the recorded assignment to you and meet with you once a week, at a time convenient to both of you. You critique and evaluate the lessons, show them the ropes, and offer any instruction or mentoring advice that will help them in their development. The student may, if you choose, serve as an intern performing any task(s) at the station that you feel are educational and for which the student is qualified.
Prior to starting sessions with you, your student will already have spent a great deal of time learning and completing four segments of prerequsite assignments from our Broadcast Communications online curriculum. The curriculum is extensive; it begins with basic voice and speech assignments. Next, it introduces the student to digital editing through the Audacity audio editor ensuring the ability to understand and work with digital audio. The curriculum continues on to include eight primary segments of instruction in all areas relevant to someone eventually wanting to work in the programming department in a commercial radio station. NBTN students earn 3 credits per Segment for a total of 24 credits required for graduation.
But, as extensive as the online curriculum is, everyone understands that it would be very difficult to break into this business by working on coursework alone. That's where you come in. The combination of online coursework combined with regular training sessions with a working broadcaster, becomes an extremely successful training program that has launched hundreds of new broadcasters into their chosen careers.
It is stressed to the student that there is no guarantee by you or NBTN that this or any radioTV station will eventually hire them. That is totally up to their abilities, desire, and development. Some level of entry-level employment is obviously what is hoped for - and what generally occurs.
National Broadcasters Training Network is a distance education school fully licensed by the State of Washington to do business nationally. NBTN is also fully accredited by the National Private Schools Accreditation Alliance. NBTN is an accredited member of the Better Business Bureau Online Reliability Program.
Over the last twenty years countless NBTN graduates have gone on to successful employment in broadcasting. In fact, many are now serving as mentors themselves. However, if for whatever reason, the program is not working to your satisfaction, we will end the program and place the student with another station and mentor.
We're looking forward to working with you. With your help, along with our proven program, we can make a difference towards making someone's dream a reality.
Where Do We Go From Here?
NBTN students have already been through an in-depth screening
process and have already completed a number of prerequsite assignments. The next step is to begin meeting with their potential mentor,
presumably you. An initial first meeting is
arranged to give the two of you an opportunity to talk and get to know each other a little bit. The
student will share their goals and desires related to this business.
You might give them some background and information regarding how you
got started. The point is to make sure you like each other and are
comfortable with each other and want to proceed together as mentor/apprentice.
If we don't
currently have a student available in your area when your application
is received, we will add your name to our database and will contact you
the next time we do have a qualified student in your area. Meantime, if
you have any questions or concerns about the NBTN program, don't
hesitate to contact us at your convenience.
