Voice Over Artist
Trained voice over artists or, voice actors, are often used by advertising
agencies to do commercials, promotions, documentaries, film narrations,
and much more.
The rewards can be extremely
lucrative with royalties often paid out over long periods of time,
however the "hit or miss" reality of being selected for voiceover work
is a reality that must be considered.
Advertising agencies typically listen to hundreds of voices looking for the one
that most perfectly fits what they're trying to convey. In other words,
It's nice work if you can get it, but be aware, It's a very a
competitive environment.
Don't plan on making a
living from voiceover work alone unless you're exceptionally talented
in this area and are already well connected in the industry. Instead,
many voiceover artists pursue voiceover work through advertising
agencies while making their living working as an on-air personality
within the broadcast industry.
The fact is, lucrative voiceover work usually goes to those who are already well
connected, known entities within the local advertising community.
Our advice, if you're interested in making a living via the spoken word, is
to become trained and employed in one of the other specialties within
the broadcast industry and then pursue voiceover work as an
accompaniment to the more steady, full-time work in broadcasting.
BTN has many mentors who are working broadcast professionals that also do a
great deal of voiceover work, that may be interested in helping you get
started.
